liquified natural gas (LNG) is defined as gas that has been cooled to a liquid state by undergoing an extensive process involving changing the molecules in a manner similar to that of syrup that results in a thick syrup. During the process, LPG or liquefied petroleum gas develops what is known as condensation. The term “condensation” refers to the fact that the gas forms into droplets when cooled. These droplets are then released through venting. The gas may also evaporate into the atmosphere.
When LPG is liquefied, it undergoes what is referred to as the condensation process. In the condensation process, the amount of gas and water vapor in the system is altered. This changes the properties of the gas, making it more elastic and less dense. Consequently, the density of the liquid form of LPG is lower than that of the same volume of the pure gas. One of the more popular transportation options is the LPG delivery via LNG carriers. LNG is delivered to consumers through tanks of liquefied gas. The gas inside the tank undergoes liquefaction processes that convert it into a vapor and stored in tanks. These tanks are then linked up with Regasification Terminals to transform the vapor back into a gas. Consumers then take fuel from their vehicles and refuel them inside their homes. LPG is then distributed via gas pipes to homes and businesses.
The gas distribution method used by LPG producers and consumers differ greatly. In an LPG plant, natural gas is instantaneously rushed into the plant, where it undergoes liquefaction and then compressed. Once it comes out of the plant, it is stored in storage tanks. The latter also undergoes liquefaction but is in a much smaller scale than the gas used in an LPG plant. Lastly, the gas is distributed via underground pipelines which connect to regional feed gas grids.
Due to the various pros and cons of the liquefaction process, it is now being considered as an alternative source of energy. Even though the technology has been around for over one hundred years, it is only now gaining widespread attention due to the growing concerns for the environment and our dependence on oil. Recent reports have shown that the LPG industry may eventually need to find ways on how to better refine and liquefy the gas to produce a purer form of energy.
